ACTIVE SHOOTER PROCEDURE
While we hope and pray that we never actually encounter an active shooter situation, we want to be prepared. These are the procedures we are putting in place, however we also ask each teacher to use their judgement as you think through the details for your classroom. We will hold a drill during one class period but please consider the actions you would take during the other periods of the day as well.

ALERT: REMIND APP
- We will plan to use the Remind App to communicate an active shooter situation. An alert will be sent to notify you of the beginning and ending of the drill.
- Please verify that you have downloaded the app and are a part of the “Explorers Co-op” Class. Please contact [email protected] for help.
- Each member needs to be familiar with how to send a Remind App notification in the event you are the person to first witness the shooter. Tap the pencil icon in the blue circle on the bottom right corner. Choose “Announcement” and select “Explorers Co-op”. Type your message (140 characters or less) and hit send. Be sure to include the location where you saw the shooter.
- Class Assistants: Please have your phone accessible during class at all times so you may watch for such a message.
ACTION
- Each teacher should aim to remain calm. Consider how and what you will say to your class in a real-life situation. This will largely depend on the age of your students. This is obviously a delicate situation for our younger students. We trust that you will use great caution and discernment as you speak with your students both during the drill and in a real life situation.
- In our drill, we will practice the procedure of hiding. However, in a real-life situation please be prepared to make the best decision for your class given the details of the situation. This may include hiding, fleeing or in the most desperate of situations, fighting back.
- Teachers on break: Please think through where you will go. While everyone would be anxious to get to their own children, we need to commit to each other that we will work to keep the children we are nearest safe. For example, if you are in the foyer and are able to get to the nursery, preK or Kinder classes, please go and help these teachers.
HIDE:
- Use the anchor on the wall as a guide or determine the otherwise best place for your students to hide.
- Lock door and blockade the door with furniture
- Be quiet! The idea is to give the illusion that the room is empty
- Special Location Considerations:
- Fellowship Hall: Go to boys bathroom and/or broom closet
- PreK and Kinder classrooms: If possible (depending on shooter location), go to Ladies Bathroom stalls.
